About Brown’s Point
Brown’s Point or Northeast Tacoma is a coastal neighborhood located on the far side of the Port of Tacoma. Most homes have spectacular views of the water. The neighborhood is somewhat isolated as it is separated by the port and is a quiet place to live surrounded by astounding beauty.
Traditionally, Brown’s Point is the most affluent part of Tacoma, WA and according to NeighborhoodScout’s analysis; the neighborhood is wealthy and is one of the 15% highest income neighborhoods in America. Like many other coastal neighborhoods, Browns Point has a nautical seaside/shipping atmosphere which is not found in other areas of Tacoma. The area along the coast is historic and easily walkable.
According to City-Data.com, in 2009, Brown’s Point had a population of 19,954. The average estimated value of detached houses in 2009 was $422,000, higher than the average estimated value of $278,445 for the rest of Tacoma. The median average rent was $1,207. Average estimated income in 2009 for residents was $84,378.
The median age in Brown’s Point was 34 years in 2009. Married residents made up 66.5% which was higher than the average of $41.6% for the rest of Tacoma. Couples with children made up 38% of households. There were equal numbers of males to females in the population.
Types of Homes
Based on population density, Brown’s Point is considered a suburban neighborhood. Houses vary from 2-3 bedroom, medium sized homes to large, single-family homes that have 4-5 bedrooms, 4-5 bathrooms and have over 4000 square feet of living space. The older homes in Brown’s Point were built mainly between the years of 1940 and 1969. Newer homes were built between the years of 1980 and 1999. Many homes of both sizes have more than 1/2 acre of land.
Brown’s Point has three public elementary schools: Northeast, Brown’s Point, and Crescent Heights Elementary Schools. All three elementary schools prepare the students to attend the Jerry Meeker Middle School. High school students usually attend Stadium High School. There are also many options available for private schooling.
The Brown’s Point neighborhood is adjacent to Brown’s Point Lighthouse Park and also has a neighborhood park that features tennis and sport courts, a baseball field, picnic tables, and a playground. Brown’s Point also has a well-known fitness center, an 18-hole golf course, and a beautiful beach to walk on.
Brown’s Point residents can take advantage of all the attractions and recreation that Tacoma has to offer. This includes art galleries, museums, golf courses, historic theaters, and a 29-acre zoo. Tacoma has two beaches, Owen Beach and Titlow Beach which offers kayak and canoe launching and scuba diving. Mt. Rainier National Park is just 2-3 hours away.
Tacoma is home to different one-of-a-kind restaurants and bakeries and has a large selection of bars and pubs to select from. Downtown Tacoma is a shopping delight with unique boutiques and famous retailers.
