About Silver Beach
The picturesque residential neighborhood of Silver Beach is one of the 24 officially recognized neighborhoods within the city of Bellingham, WA. Unlike the other city neighborhoods, Silver Beach is the only one that is located on the shores of Lake Whatcom, being situated at the northern edge of the lake.
Scenic Silver Beach is inhabited by over 4,400 residents and contains roughly 1,500 diverse households. Properties within the neighborhood range from luxurious, lakeside homes to single-family and rental properties near the lake.
Things to Do In Silver Beach, Bellingham
Shopping in the area is limited in order to maintain a small town feel. Located only three miles apart, both the Lakeway Center and the Fred Meyer Shopping Center have grocery stores to fit everyone’s needs. The Barkley Village Shopping Center contains, amongst other stores, many restaurants, a pharmacy, and a cinema. It is located within reasonable driving distance to many Silver Beach residents.
While there are no colleges or universities in the area, the educational needs of the younger residents are met. There are a number of schools to choose from, depending on location. Public school students residing north of Alabama Street are served by Silver Beach Elementary, Whatcom Middle School and Sqaulicum High School.
Those living south of Alabama Street are served by Geneva Elementary, Kulshan Middle School, and Bellingham High School. Bellingham Christian School and Wheels of Life School are both private schools located not far from Silver Beach.
There are many activities to do outdoors. Bloedel Donovan Park is the only public park in the neighborhood. The beach is a popular summertime destination for residents, many of whom go swimming and have picnics lakeside. The community building within the park is used for various events throughout the year.
There is also a playground for children as well as a basketball court and a sand volleyball area for those who wish to get some exercise in. During the peak season, dogs are allowed off-leash until 10 a.m. During the rest of the year, dog owners can let their pets roam off-leash.
Big Rock Garden Park (one of three places within Bellingham, and the only one in Silver Beach, to see outdoor sculptures) is a city park that art lovers will enjoy. Open year round during daylight hours, there is always something new to see. Along with a botanical garden, it contains over 35 permanent outdoor sculptures.
From May through September, the annual International Sculpture Exhibit features anywhere between 10 and 20 additional sculptures to muse over. Other special events are hosted at the Park during the summer season. Pet owners please note that pets are unfortunately not allowed into the park.
Not to be missed, Silver Beach Preserve, is located close to Big Rock Garden Park. Boasting 22 beautiful acres, this undeveloped forest preserve features numerous constructed, nature trails which the public can use to explore the woodlands. These trails, which can be hiked, lead to different wildlife sanctuaries as well as a small, isolated lake.
