Alabama Hill is a residential neighborhood of about 3,000 residents in Bellingham, Washington, the county seat of Whatcom County. The Alabama Hill community sits atop and on the western slope of Alabama Hill.
On top of the hill, there are wide, curving streets, cul-de-sacs, and large, deep lots dotted with single-family homes. Many of the well-maintained, contemporary houses face west to take advantage of the scenic view of the city and Bellingham Bay since Alabama Hill is one of the highest points in Bellingham.
St. Clair Park is a favorite neighborhood park. Residents from all sections of Bellingham bring their children to this Alabama Hill Park because the park is beautiful, and clean and there are many recreation facilities for children.
Whatcom Falls Park and Highland Park also offer open spaces for recreation. Whatcom Falls Park, which follows the creek, has excellent fishing spots and a fish hatchery on-site.
Younger residents of Alabama Hill attend Bellingham School District’s Roosevelt Elementary School, followed by Whatcom Middle School and then Squalicum High School if they live north of Alabama Street.
School-age children in Alabama Hill who reside on the southern side of Alabama Street also go to Roosevelt Elementary School and then Kulshan Middle School, followed by Bellingham High School. Bellingham School District has an excellent science curriculum, one of the best in the nation.
After high school graduation, students interested in higher education have a prestigious public university, Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Western Washington University’s Sehome Arboretum and impressive collection of art sculptures, both open to the public, are two of Bellingham’s most prized cultural assets.
Alabama Hill’s Railroad Trail allows residents to walk or bike to the Barkley District, where there are shops, a supermarket, restaurants, and several banks. A pedestrian bridge on the Railroad Trail provides safe passage across Alabama Street.
There is a regular bus service in Bellingham and Amtrak’s commuter train makes it easy for residents to visit Seattle and Portland, Oregon. Bellingham International Airport offers commuter service to most major cities in the western portion of the United States.
Alabama Hill residents enjoy close proximity to the rugged North Cascades Mountain for challenging mountaineering and ferries travel to four of the San Juan Islands for whale-watching and kayaking adventures. Outdoor recreation is popular with Bellingham residents; the city holds a number of outdoor events, such as the Ski to Sea race and the Bay Marathon.
Although Alabama Hill is almost entirely residential, the Bellingham Railway Museum, Whatcom Museum of History and Art, and the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention are within easy driving distance for residents. Classical music enthusiasts will enjoy performances by the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra. A university town, Bellingham also has a thriving local music scene.
